Newspapers vs Twitter: A Fair Comparison?

By Norty | June 4, 2010 22:35

The recent web faceoff series by Mashable pits Twitter vs. Facebook in a poll, “Where do you get more of your news: Twitter or newspapers?”

While posing this question is a great way to gauge social media and its growing importance in our daily lives, I don’t think the comparison of platforms is a fair fight.

Twitter is a medium to share information. And while you could argue that newspapers attempt to do the same, the architecture of each platform is different. Twitter, a micro-blogging platform, is a means to get to the information. It’s the route to your final destination.  You can’t use Twitter to compile a story or write an editorial. Twitter, and social media and general, is used to share information which is mostly contained elsewhere (i.e. newspapers, TV news websites, and blogs).

There is no doubt that newspapers should be harnessing the power of Twitter to drive traffic and market their product. Maybe the better poll to judge where you get your news is to put newspapers in the ring with blogs in a battle of the big guy vs. the little guy.

IE6 Market Share is Finally below 5% in U.S.

By Norty | June 1, 2010 08:33

As reported by StatCounter, IE6 has fallen below 5% market share in the U.S. and Europe for the first time EVER. This is great news for the whole of internet users that seek a truly interactive and robust experience on the Internet. With the news of IE6 being used by this few of people, more web developers may follow in the mold of YouTube and withdraw support for IE6.

StatCounter's numbers are based on a data set of 15 billion page views for May 2010 collected from the StatCounter network of over three million websites. These numbers show IE6 slipping from 11.5% to 4.7% in a 12 month period.

For now, Norlight Professional Services will continue to support IE6, but that may be changing in the future if IE6 keeps falling out of the market.

Why Did My Twitter Password Get Reset?

By Norty | February 4, 2010 09:32

Twitter recently sent out password resets to accounts that were suspected of being high-jacked. Twitter has diagnosed the cause of this issue to be sites with security exploits that share the same username and password as your Twitter account.

"The takeaway from this is that people are continuing to use the same email address and password (or a variant) on multiple sites... We strongly suggest that you use different passwords for each service you sign up for."

Read the post from Twitter for complete details on the Twitter Password Reset.

Be secure, be safe, be smart.

Is Google Chrome #3 in the Browser Wars?

By Norty | January 5, 2010 09:53

According to Net Applications' browser market share for December 2009, Google Chrome is #3 on the browser list.

December 2009 Browser Market Share

The data in itself is a remarkable accomplishment considered Chrome only entered the competition for browser market share about 16 months ago. However, I would suggest caution on the implication that Chrome has taken the #3 spot from Safari for the long term.

In December of 2009 Google released Chrome for Mac. This long anticipated launch conveniently pushed Chrome above Safari for this month. But we should use caution to declare Chrome the #3 browser based upon 1 month of data in the headlines of platform launch. It would be safe to say that a large section of Mac surfers use Safari and may have been test driving Chrome. I do see the climb of the Chrome market share as an imminent progression, especially with the announcement of Extensions in beta. But, I don't think we are there just yet.
